Hundreds and thousands of migrants come to Australia each year and yet the country sports one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world at 5.7%. Nonetheless, finding a job in Australia as an expat can be a challenging task.

If you do not have a job offer, but are planning to migrate to Australia, you can refer to the following resources to look for a position suitable to your work experience and qualifications:

Employment Websites

Australian companies and recruitment agencies have turned to the Internet for advertising their job vacancies.

  • Seek– the country’s most comprehensive job website.
  • Jobactive– the job search site is owned and managed by the Australian government.
  • Career One– Career One advertises jobs for huge companies like Zara, Uber, and General Electrics.
  • Recruit– the website has a database for over 120,000 jobs.
  • Jobnet– Jobnet posts mostly IT jobs.
  • GradAustralia– if you are a student looking for a job in Australia, this site is for you.
  • Blue Collar– they post blue collar jobs mostly for manufacturing, construction, mining and agricultural businesses industry.
  • Adzuna– Based in United Kingdom, their Australian site boasts of a database containing 120,000 jobs in the country.
  • Career Jet– Based in USA, their Australian site features more than 180,000 jobs published in the country.
  • Indeed– another Australian job search site based in the USA.
  • Jora– the international job search site also has an Australian version, currently advertising 290,000 jobs.
  • UniJobs– the country’s leading university jobs website.

Private Employment Agencies

Scattered across major cities and towns in Australia, employment agencies find work for close to 100,000 people each year from executives to managers to professionals to even temporary staff. There are mainly four types of private agencies in the country:

  • Personnel consultants – also known as head-hunters, they mostly cater to executive, managerial and professional positions
  • Labour hire contractors – they manage jobs for skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled manual workers
  • Student employment services – they help students in Australia in need of a job
  • Employment agencies- provide services for the general job-searching need of people in the country; the largest number of agencies come in this form

When visiting any of these agencies, make sure you have the following requirements:

  • English fluency – Being able to speak the language fluently increases your chances of getting the job.
  • Passport – With a visa, if applicable. This is a proof of your identity and that you have entered the country legally and in good faith.
  • Curriculum Vitae – A well written one.
  • Tax File Number - This is a unique identifier issued by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) to each taxpaying entity. You may get it through here.

Newspapers

Before the Internet’s conception, newspapers were the primary channel of job posting and searching both for employers and employees. These days, it is still a good reference for job searching.

Daily papers like The AustralianThe Age (Melbourne), The Courier-Mail (Queensland), The West Australian (Western region), The Canberra Times (Australian Capital Territory), The Sydney Morning Herald (New South Wales) all advertise vacant job posts respective to their cities.

Networking

As Keith Ferrazzi had said in his book Never Eat Alone, “Today’s most valuable currency is social capital… that exist in the relationships you have and social networks to which you belong.” Most of the time, success depends not just on what you know, but who you know. Networking is perhaps the oldest method in which human beings find employment, and the one that’s most underrated.

You can get together with people of the same skills, interests, or industry so you could exchange contacts. If you are a member of an organization, you may write to them to supply you a list of vacant positions related to your industry. You may also go to networking events and talk to people, find their other connections, and exchange calling cards or phone number.

Just a final word. These steps might be comprehensive and extensive, but we still advise that you migrate to Australia with an intact job offer. This article is for those who came to the country suddenly unemployed, or has lost their job a few months or years here. Being prepared is still always the best plan.
