Who is this visa for?
This visa is for parents who have a child that is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or an eligible New Zealand citizen. The sponsoring child has to have lived in Australia for at least 2 years. Shorter periods of residency can be considered on compassionate and compelling circumstances.
There is a significant demand for this visa and the Australian Government has placed a limitation on how many parent visas are granted each year. There is a substantial wait on this visa.
Instead, applicants can choose to apply for a Contributory Parent visa. The average waiting time for this visa is usually 2 years which is significantly less than the traditional Parent visa, which can take more than 10 years to process.
To apply for the Contributory Parent visa, the application fee is significantly more than the traditional Parent visa. Applicants will also need to organise an assurance of support bond before the visa can be granted. Parent/s can opt for the 2 stage Contributory Parent visa which will allow them to pay the application fee in 2 instalments (over 4 years approximately).
